Don't shoot the runners!

I woke up early Wednesday morning because I wanted to get a little extra mileage in today, and oh, man, it was dark.

Really, really dark.

It's a good thing I know the trail where I run so well! It didn't start lightening up until I was almost a mile an a half down the path. It was a little creepy, but with my pups along, I feel pretty well protected.

I didn't get scared until almost halfway through with my run when a gunshot nearby startled me so bad I screamed!

There's a hunting area next to the trail in some spots, and while I often see wildlife, and occasionally see hunters in the distance, I'd never heard a gunshot from the trail that was so close.

It was pretty scary.

Because I was still a little shaken up during my cool down run, I walked a little extra for my cool down. I wanted to walk towards the south, because generally, If I'm below mile 3 on the trail at 8am, I can hear the national anthem when they raise the flag on the naval base. I love hearing that. For the longest time, I didn't know what I was hearing, I could just hear the faintest music, and it was almost a spiritual experience. Later, when I realized that I always heard it right at 8 am, I figured it out. But that didn't make me enjoy it any less.

Being raised a military brat, the national anthem was ingrained in my soul. Not just before sporting events, but before school functions, and even before every movie shown in the base theatre.

Weirdly enough, I couldn't hear it! Then I realized that I hadn't heard it in a few weeks. Military friends, did the government shutdown change how the flag is raised on base? If so, there's yet another reason to be happy about the government reopening!

  1. That would have freaked me out! I never run in the dark by myself. I feel the same way about the national anthem. I know it's happened before but I've been shocked by how many things are affected by the shutdown.
